So, I’m also using the latest Ubuntu at home. I decided to keep it for 1 reason: I’m too used to Expose from mac, and only Xgl allowed me to run compiz. I tried to run it under slackware, but it took me a while to get to nowhere. After I had the look and feel and all servers running, I started to look for programs under linux that I’m using for my daily work and here is what I got:

Linux (Gnome/GTK) Linux(KDE/QT) Mac Purpose Note
Evolution Kmail Mail.app Mail client I like it a lot that Mail.app combines (on the screen) all my mailboxes and I don’t have to go through all of them when I check my email. The other two programs create separate mailboxes and I have to click on one at a time.
Firefox Firefox Safari Web Browser I definitely like Firefo as a browser more, but I miss the way Safari handles RSS feeds
Rhythmbox Amarok iTunes Music here the situation is a little tricky, but so far I think I like Rhythmbox the best.
Totem-xine Kaffeine VLC Movies I like VLC the best of all, but it has a problem with the Passthrough spdif option, that’s why I don’t use it under Linux. Sometimes I change VLC with mplayer.
TexLive TexLive TexLive TeX backend no comment
Texmaker TexShop TeX frontend TexShop the best. This is one of the best programs I’ve used!
Quanta Plus Quanta Plus Dreamweaver CS3 Web Development Here Dreamweaver is a definite leader and in both cases I’m not even considering the visual editors.
Photoshop CS2 Photoshop CS2 Photoshop CS3 Графична обработка Photoshop is Photoshop.
pidgin kopete Adium IM client Like TexShop, Adium is one of the great programs for Mac. I love it
Azureus 2.5 Azureus 2.5 Azureus 2.5 Torrent client I think it works best
gnome-terminal konsole iTerm terminal I used to use aterm a lot, but now I don’t mind much which terminal I use.
Firefox RSS Reader Safari RSS reader see the browsers
OOo OOo TextEdit Text editing Since quite some time, if I don’t need some special formatting, I use the simplest features and I don’t care where I write. Otherwise, for larger papers I use LaTeX
